Dealing With Homesickness

Homesickness is something that I struggle immensely with. It doesn't matter whether I'm staying overnight 2 doors away from my house or spending 2 weeks in another country, the minute I get there I find myself pining for my own bed, my Mum and a more familiar environment, however, I do, 9 times out of 10 enjoy myself whenever I stay away from home and manage to battle through my desire to be sat in my own bedroom eating my favourite foods.
Therefore, I thought I would create a blog post containing some tips on how to deal with homesickness whilst away from loved environments and people. This blog post was also requested so I hope it may help some of you!

Get out and explore
When feeling homesick, staying in your bedroom worrying about what your family are doing all day every day can eat you up inside and cause you to believe that you're never going to leave, so instead, go outside and get active! Not only does this take your mind off of feeling homesick, it also makes the time go faster and, before you know it, it will be time to go home! It's also a great way to create some memories and make you realise that you are actually having fun. You never know, by the end of the trip you may not want to leave!

Speak to your loved ones regularly
When spending time away, spending every waking moment on the phone to a family member obviously won't aid your homesickness, if anything, it can cause you to worry more, however, definitely check in with them regularly. This gives you reassurance that everything back home is tip top and hearing the voice of someone you love can work wonders when you're feeling sad, plus, if you just fancy a good old cry to your Mum, you can do that too! Additionally, you can share what you've been getting up to throughout your trip and share funny stories. It will also let them know that you're okay.

Pack comforting items
Whether it be a family photo in a frame or a blanket with a familiar smell, taking home comforts with your on your trip can be a life saver. Personally, I always take my teddy bears with me as they help me sleep as well as comforting me! This allows you to make wherever you are staying a little bit more of a home away from home!

Take some time out
If your homesickness is really getting you down and going out exploring isn't doing any good, you may just need a little time to yourself! Let the people who you are with know that you just want to be alone for a little while and they will totally understand! Sometimes, a good cry can be just what you need or you may even just need to bury yourself in your duvet and blast your music full volume! After some alone time, you may feel a lot better! A good sleep can help too, perhaps causing you to wake up totally refreshed the next morning!

Feeling homesick is totally normal so never feel as though you are being a burden as everyone feels homesick at some point! Find what works best for you to put a smile back on your face when staying away from home and I hope this post was somewhat useful! Let me know if you ever fancy a chat if you are feeling homesick as I am always here to give virtual cuddles! :D

Where is the last place you travelled to? I'm intrigued! <3

Love, Emily :) xx
