There's Always A Reason

One of my favourite things to constantly remind people and to always keep at the forefront of my mind is that there is always a reason why everyone is the way that they are. These days, people can be very quick to make assumptions, even without realising it, but its one of the most important things to remember, that everyone has a story.

When you see someone who may weigh a considerable amount walking down the street, you may assume its because they are lazy and cant be bothered to exercise.

When you see someone who may not weigh much at all walking down the street, you may assume its because they are self obsessed and love showing off about how slim they are.

When you see someone strutting down the street, wiggling their hips, holding their head high and flicking their hair, you may assume its because they enjoy the attention and want everyone to think they are amazing.

When you see someone walking down the street with their head down, avoiding making eye contact with strangers and only mumbling a 'thanks' as someone holds the door open for them, you may assume its because they are rude with no manners.

When you see someone walking down the street, hand in hand with their boyfriend or girlfriend, kissing, cuddling and fooling around, you may think its because they're being childish and they want everyone to pass comment on how cute they are.

When you see someone walking down the street in exercise gear, drinking a green smoothie and wearing the latest trainers, you may think its because they're a gym freak and want to show off how healthy they are.

When you see someone walking down the street in a suit, swinging a briefcase around in one hand and talking on the phone to an important client on the other, you may assume its because they are arrogant and want the world to know how much money they have.

But, little do you know, that person who weighs a considerable amount has just lost their mother and turned to food for comfort when they thought they couldn't go on any longer without her and doesn't exercise as they spend most of their days crying.

Little do you know, that person who doesn't weigh much at all has spent their life comparing themselves to what they see in the media and has a severe mental disorder which has ruined their life, causing them to see food as an enemy and is terrified to eat.

Little do you know, that person who walks with their head held high has been bullied their whole life and has finally learnt to love themselves and be confident after spending years keeping themselves to themselves and barely speaking as they were worried about what people would think.

Little do you know, that rude person walking with their head down suffers with severe anxiety and has just had a panic attack before they left the house. They avoid making eye contact with people as they feel like everyone who looks at them is judging them.

Little do you know, that person putting on a huge PDA with their boyfriend or girlfriend grew up believing they would never find true love and this is their first proper relationship. They finally feel like somebody enjoys their company and are excited about having someone there for them.

Little do you know, that person walking down the street in gym clothing used to be dangerously overweight, on the brink of death, and is proud of themselves for losing weight and, for the first time in a long time, feel confident in showing off their body.

Little do you know, that person swinging their briefcase around grew up with several siblings but only one parent and their family never had much money. They were always the main breadwinner and have grown their business over time. They are proud of the fact that they are able to provide for their parent who always struggled to provide for them.

You don't realise it, but you actually know even less than you think you know about the people you see walking down the street. You also know even less than you think you know about those closest to you.
It can be so easy, especially in a society like the one we live in today, to judge someone. You see a quiet girl in class and think she's nerdy, you see a popular girl showing off her new phone to her friends and think she's bragging. Even the most annoying of actions have reasons behind them, for example, that girl showing off could have just received that phone from her Dad and it is the first present she has had from him as she never knew him, or she may feel proud that she bought it with her own money after getting her first job, there are a number of possible reasons behind everything you see happening around you.
Yes, there is a chance that someone is just doing something without thinking about it, yes that girl may just really want to show off her new phone, but, most of the time, they are acting the way that they are due to personal experiences they had growing up.
You may not even realise it, but you act the way that you do because of things you have gone through. They have changed you and shaped you into the person that you are today. So, don't be so hard on yourself! Next time you think, "ugh I wish I wasn't so awkward and quiet" or "omg why am I so loud and annoying" just take a second to remember that you are how you are because of the sometimes amazing, sometimes heartbreaking, things you have seen, felt or experienced.

If you take one thing from this blog post, please let it be that you should never be so quick to judge. It's hard, I get that. It's basic human instinct to make an assumption about someone when you first see them but, when you have that judgemental thought, before you blurt it out to your friends and start gossiping about someone in your group, just stop and consider why that person did what they just did, or why they said what they just said, or why they look how they look. Please, it's very important and can also be beneficial to you as it can open your eyes a bit more to realise that the world is not so black and white and maybe something deeper is going on inside some body's head.

Everyone has a story, a story which you know not even the cover of just from appearances.

Love, Emily :) xx

  1. This was very insightful to read. It's so easy to judge and assume something about someone nowadays without thinking about what they may be going through. xo
